Quiet Curve was all about the shape for me. The beautiful sweep of blue curves gently through the landscape, surrounded by soft pink, lavender, cream and muted gold.
Colour caught me first, but I love what happens when you look more closely. There are tiny ripples, cracks and marks everywhere, and the two pieces of timber give just a small clue that what you're looking at is actually a landscape rather than a painting.
The curve gives the image such a lovely sense of movement without being dramatic. Your eye simply follows it through the frame, discovering different colours and textures along the way.
Quiet Curve is part of my Painted Earth series, where photographing directly from above lets me forget about traditional landscape and concentrate on the things I love most—colour, shape and texture.
Interior Design Suggestions
Quiet Curve has a soft palette, but the stronger blue running through the centre gives the image a beautiful focal point.
The combination of powder blue, lavender, blush, cream and muted gold would sit beautifully with warm whites, pale timber, linen, natural stone and other neutral finishes. It would be particularly suited to contemporary living rooms, bedrooms and quiet sitting spaces where you want colour without overwhelming the room.
I would definitely consider this image at a larger scale. From across the room, the sweeping curve becomes almost painterly. Up close, all the fine ripples and textures across the earth reveal themselves.
