Colour is always what grabs me first, and in Drift Line it was these beautiful soft blues, mauves, pinks and earthy tones that immediately caught my attention.
From above, the landscape almost stops looking like land. The colours drift into one another, divided by a loose line that sweeps diagonally through the image. Then, when you look closer, all the little details begin to appear—the cracked earth, scattered vegetation, changing textures and subtle marks across the surface.
This is what I love about photographing from the air. I can take something completely natural and isolate a small part of it until it begins to feel like an abstract painting.
Drift Line is part of my Painted Earth series, celebrating those moments when nature creates combinations of colour, shape and texture that I could never have designed myself.
Interior Design Suggestions
Drift Line has a particularly beautiful palette for interiors because its colour is present without being overpowering. The powdery blue and lavender tones are balanced by blush pink, muted ochre and soft earthy neutrals.
It would work beautifully in a contemporary living room, bedroom or quiet sitting area, particularly with pale timber, natural stone, linen, warm whites and other softly textured finishes.
At a large scale, the abstraction becomes even stronger. From across the room you see sweeping areas of colour; as you move closer, the fine cracks, vegetation and textures of the landscape emerge. I think this is one of those images that deserves room to breathe rather than being surrounded by lots of competing artwork.
