Painted Earth

Colour is always the first thing I see.

From the air, these landscapes stopped me with the most extraordinary combination of lavender, blue, blush, ochre and soft gold. Then I began seeing the shapes—the lines and curves moving through the earth—and finally all those wonderful tiny cracks, marks and textures.
That is what I love about photographing from above. Take away the horizon and any real sense of scale, and the landscape becomes something completely different. At times these images look more like paintings than photographs, yet every colour, line and texture was already there.
Painted Earth is a celebration of nature as an artist. I didn't create the palette or draw the lines. I simply found them.
And that is what continues to excite me most: discovering places where nature has already created something more beautiful and unexpected than I could ever have imagined.
